Ben Stokes takes indefinite break from cricket to focus on mental health

Ben Stokes has pulled out of the India Test series to take an indefinite break from cricket.

The star all rounder has taken the decision to leave the game for a time in order to prioritise his mental well-being following several years of emotional highs and lows.

The ECB said the allrounder will take time out of the game to focus on his mental wellbeing, as well as allowing more time for recovery from a finger injury.

Craig Overton will replace Stokes in the squad for the first two Tests against India, scheduled to take place at Trent Bridge and Lord’s from August 6.

Stokes also needs to further look after his left index finger which continues to cause him huge amounts of pain despite having healed after surgery.

It is though the need to step away from the game ahead of the biggest contest of the summer that will stun cricket fans who had hoped to see the 30-year-old back in whites for the first time since the winter.

IPL 2021 to resume in UAE

The BCCI, during its Special General Meeting, formally decided that the unfinished part of the Indian Premier League 2021 will be held in the United Arab Emirates.

The move to stage the IPL in the UAE was largely expected. As reported earlier, the BCCI has already had an informal agreement with the Emirates Cricket Board. The formal decision was taken on Saturday (May 29) to move the remainder of IPL 2021 to the UAE – in view of the bad weather in India around September-October, when it wants to host the remaining 31 IPL games.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said during the SGM that the BCCI is ‘positive’ of getting the tax exemption for the World Cup from the Indian government.

The IPL was postponed after 29 games, when Covid entered the bubble. It is set for a restart after India’s five-match Test series in England that concludes on September 14. With India reeling under the second wave of the pandemic, there’s a question mark over organising the T20 World Cup in India as well, but as the BCCI said, the members expressed optimism. The BCCI will communicate its decision to the ICC ahead of its Board meeting on June 1.

Indian women to play maiden pink ball Test in Australia later this year

The Indian women’s cricket team will compete in its maiden day-night Test from September 30 to October 3 when it tours Australia this year.

The match will be played in Perth, which hasn’t hosted a day-night game as yet, Cricket Australia said after BCCI secretary Jay Shah Shah made the initial announcement.

“Taking forward our commitment towards women’s cricket, I am extremely pleased to announce that Team India @BCCIwomen will play in their first-ever pink ball day-night Test later this year in Australia,” Shah tweeted.

The Indian women’s team, which will play its first Test in seven years from June 16 in England, will compete in another one during the tour of Australia.

The team will also play three ODIs (from September 19 to 24) and as many T20 International matches (from October 7 to 11) Down Under. India last played a Test against Australia in 2006.

The pink ball Test between India and Australia will be only the second such match to be held in the history of women’s cricket.

Rahul Dravid To Coach Team India On Sri Lanka Tour

Former India skipper and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) head Rahul Dravid will coach the Indian limited-overs team that will play a six-game series against Sri Lanka in July. This will be his second stint with the Indian team after working with the boys as batting consultant during the England tour in 2014.

Speaking to ANI, a BCCI official in the know of developments confirmed that the NCA head would be leading the team as the trio of Ravi Shastri, Bharat Arun and Vikram Rathour will be in England with the Test team.

“The Team India coaching staff will be in the UK and it is best that the young team is guided by Dravid as he has already worked with almost all of the India ‘A’ boys.

The comfort the youngsters share with him will be an added advantage,” the official said. Before taking over as the head of NCA in 2019, Dravid had worked closely with the current crop of youngsters in the Indian team at the U-19 level as well as in the India ‘A’ team.

In fact, he is seen to have played an integral role in building a solid bench strength for the national team over the last couple of years — having taken charge of the U-19 and ‘A’ team in 2015.

Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya Likely To Lead India On Sri Lanka Tour

Opener Shikhar Dhawan and flamboyant allrounder- turned specialist batsman Hardik Pandya will be locked in a two-way fight for India captaincy if Shreyas Iyer doesn’t get fit in time for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July.

India’s limited-overs specialists will be playing three T20 Internationals and as many ODIs in the island nation during the second half of July, when big guns like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be in England for a marquee five-match Test series. “It is still not clear if Shreyas will recover fully and will be match-fit in time for tour of Sri Lanka.

Normally, a surgery of this scale along with rest, extensive rehab and training to get back in shape takes around four months,” a senior BCCI source privy to selection matters told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“In case Shreyas was available, he would have been the automatic choice for captaincy,” the senior BCCI source added.

It’s only logical that the two contenders for captaincy are 35-year-old Dhawan, who has had good “one and half IPLs” in last two seasons and Pandya junior, who is one of the most accomplished match-winners.

India will tour Sri Lanka in July for limited overs series confirms Sourav Ganguly.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said that the Indian team, sans the top players, will tour Sri Lanka in July for a limited-overs bilateral series.

Big names such as skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma will not be part of the tour as they will be engaged in a marquee five-match Test series in England.

There will be at least 5 T20 Internationals and may be three ODIs in Sri Lanka. India’s tour of England will end on September 14 and with the schedule of the remainder of IPL yet to be chalked out, the BCCI would want the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal to be match ready.

“The BCCI president is very keen that all our top players are match ready and since England doesn’t have a white ball leg the month of July can be utilized well,” a BCCI source told PTI while explaining the logic behind the tour.

For the Kohlis and Sharmas, they need not come from UK, which has in place some hard quarantine rules. “Technically, in the month of July there are no official senior India team matches. The Test squad will be playing intra squad games.

Tim Seifert tests positive for Covid-19.

KKR’s Tim Seifert tests positive for Covid-19, to be treated in Chennai before flying home

Seifert had joined the Knight Riders as a replacement for the injured USA bowler Ali Khan during IPL 2020. He was retained ahead of the auction in February this year but did not get a game in IPL 2021.

Seifert becomes the third player from the KKR camp to have contracted the virus in the now-postponed IPL 2021, after Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier.

As per New Zealand Cricket’s statement, Seifert failed both his pre-departure RT-PCR tests and is currently experiencing “moderate symptoms”. The statement also noted that he had “returned seven negative tests in the 10 days leading up to his pre-departure protocols”.

The wicket-keeper-batsman is expected to be transferred to Chennai for treatment, in the same private hospital where former Australia cricketer and Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey has been staying since testing positive for COVID-19.
